With every coming new year, we traditionally make resolutions with the hope of starting over, wiping the slate clean or getting a second chance. You get the idea…a “do over”. It is also customary to see how long it takes before we fall back on our resolutions to old habits we were trying to get rid of. Tonight as I waited for the ball to drop in Times Square, I was thinking about what a “clean slate” meant to me. It occurred to me that I was given a second chance when I decided to rededicate my life to Jesus Christ on September 9, 2007. Since then, instead of making resolutions, I’m thankful for the second chance that I received when I made that decision. Gone were the days of trying to rationalize negative behaviors. I now realized that by making the decision to completely turn my life over to God, I received the perfect gift – a living hope.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. (1 Peter 1:3)
I still make mistakes and bad decisions. However, instead of wiping the slate clean each December 31st and trying to overcome them myself, I rest assured knowing that Christ paid the ultimate price and wiped the slate clean for me.
Looking forward to 2010, I remain confident that my eyes and heart will be opened to new experiences and challenges. I might not know what the next 365 days will bring, but I will be thankful for the second chance I received and will live out my life knowing that God has His own plan for me.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Happy New Year.
